Matosinhos (Porto, Portugal) is a former industrial and fishing centre and a comparatively recent settlement linked to Porto’s city centre. Despite a recent population decrease, Matosinhos sees an increasing demand for low-income housing. The Matosinhos Energy Hub project aims to support citizens in improving thermal comfort in their homes and mitigating energy poverty.
Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto, Portugal) is a central piece of the Porto Metropolitan Area municipalities, as a former industrial suburb of Porto, providing housing to middle-class and low-class communities.
The research in Ghent seeks to explore innovative bottom-up methodologies to empower communities and drive positive transformation within the CO2PED case neighborhoods. The objective is to identify actionable strategies for sustainable urban development, with a particular focus on addressing social needs, fostering community participation, and promoting empowerment.
